The Woman and the Serpent
The wind howled over the barren plain as she stood alone, her wide-brimmed black hat casting a shadow over her sharp gaze. The serpent coiled before her, its thick body shifting through the dust, its golden eyes gleaming with hunger.

“You’ve taken enough,” she whispered, her voice low but steady.

The beast hissed, its forked tongue tasting the air between them. It had slithered through villages, swallowing dreams, poisoning hearts. It had wrapped itself around the weak and feasted on their fears. But now, it had met her.

The woman reached up, fingers brushing the strands of messy blonde hair from her face. With one slow, deliberate motion, she removed her hat and tossed it to the ground. The sky darkened. The wind stilled.

The serpent lunged.

She did not move.

At the last moment, she lifted her hands, and from her fingertips, color burst forth—thick, vibrant strokes of blue and red, swirling like a tempest. The serpent screeched as the paint struck its scales, burning like fire. It thrashed, coiling and writhing, but the colors consumed it, turning its form into nothing but smudges in the air.

When the dust settled, the serpent was gone—only a streak of black remained, fading into the wind.

The woman exhaled, picked up her hat, and placed it back on her head. She turned toward the horizon, her lips barely curving into a smile.

The world was safe—for now.
