On a crisp August morning in 2025, Private Thomas Hargreaves, a spectral remnant of the Great War, found himself drifting through the bustling streets of modern London. His tattered khaki uniform, still bearing the scars of trench mud and shrapnel, marked him as an anachronism among the towering red buses and sleek smartphones. Thomas had no memory of how he’d crossed the veil, only a vague pull to walk the city he’d once defended. As he moved through Trafalgar Square, a group of young men, dressed in contemporary jackets and hoodies, noticed him. Their laughter rang out, sharp and mocking, as they pointed at his ghostly form. “Look at this guy, straight out of a history book!” one shouted, his voice carrying a thick accent from the Middle East. Another snapped a photo, chuckling, “Bet he’s lost his tank!” The crowd around them joined in, their amusement a stark contrast to Thomas’s solemn gaze.Unseen by most, Thomas felt the sting of their laughter, a echo of the jeers he’d faced upon returning from the front a century ago. Yet, something shifted as a young woman, her headscarf fluttering in the breeze, stepped forward. “Leave him be,” she said softly, her eyes meeting his translucent ones. The hecklers faltered, their laughter fading into awkward silence.Thomas nodded faintly, a gratitude he couldn’t voice. As the crowd dispersed, he faded back into the mist, the woman’s kindness a faint warmth against the cold of his eternal march.
