**Red Dust and Neon Dreams**

The twin suns of Mars hung low in the hazy, pinkish sky, casting long shadows across the cracked dirt road. The space cowboy adjusted his green hat, tilting it forward to block the glare. His space suit, worn and patched from years of dust storms and rough landings, clung to his frame as he walked. Beside him, his daughter—no more than ten years old—kicked at the red dirt with the tip of her boot. Her blonde hair was tied back, and her green eyes scanned the towering neon skyline of New Valles ahead.

“Do you think Mom’s up there somewhere?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

He let out a breath, his shorter red beard scratching against his helmet’s collar. “If she is, we’ll find her.”

New Valles was a city of contradictions—blinding neon against ancient rock, promise against decay. The towering megastructures loomed like monoliths of forgotten dreams, their vaporwave glow reflecting off the dust that never quite settled. Holograms flickered overhead, advertising off-world getaways neither of them could afford.

The cowboy placed a hand on his daughter’s shoulder, steady and firm. “Just stick close, Lilly. Cities like this got their own kind of gravity. Pulls folks in, don’t let ‘em go easy.”

They reached the outskirts, where Martian traders hawked wares under rusted metal awnings. Oxygen tanks, ion cartridges, bootleg synth-coffee. The cowboy scanned the crowd, his eyes landing on a rust-colored android leaning against a supply crate, its optics flickering erratically.

“You got work for a pilot?” the cowboy asked.

The android turned its head in jerky motions. “That depends. You looking to fly *legal* or *lucrative*?”

Lilly tightened her grip on his hand.

He smirked. “Ain’t much difference in a city like this.”

The android let out a static-laced chuckle. “That’s what I like to hear.”

The cowboy glanced at the looming towers once more, feeling the weight of the journey ahead. They weren’t just looking for work. They were chasing a ghost. Somewhere in that neon jungle, Lilly’s mother was waiting. Or at least, the truth about what had happened to her.

Either way, they weren’t leaving empty-handed.

And Mars? Mars never gave up its secrets without a fight.
