The Guardian of Solis Vallis

The red sands of Mars stretched endlessly under the pale salmon sky. Elara brushed a bead of sweat from her forehead as she trudged deeper into Solis Vallis, a massive canyon that had been mapped decades ago but rarely explored in person. The air inside her pressurized helmet hummed faintly, her oxygen tank hissing with every practiced breath. She wasn’t here by chance—she was a scavenger, a finder of lost things. And today, her instincts had led her to something… extraordinary.

Her rover had detected unusual metallic readings deep within this long-dormant valley. Elara had followed the signal, armed with her trusty plasma drill and a knack for uncovering secrets. After hours of searching, her shovel struck something that didn’t belong—something ancient.

Beneath layers of ochre dust, she unearthed a gleaming artifact: a crystalline sphere, nested within a lattice of golden filaments that pulsed faintly with an internal light. It was unlike anything she had ever seen—earthly or Martian. It hummed faintly in her hands, as though alive.

A message flared on her helmet’s comm screen: “Caution: Unknown Energy Signature. Possible Biohazard.”

Elara ignored the warning. Her heart raced as she realized this was no wreckage from an old Earth probe, no piece of discarded terraforming equipment. This was… something else. Something alien. The engravings etched on the sphere’s surface seemed to shift when she looked away and re-focus, forming patterns that tugged at the edges of her mind.

Then it happened. As soon as she clutched the artifact, the wind picked up. A wind. On Mars. That was impossible. Her suit’s sensors blared with static interference. The sky darkened, and a low rumble surged through the valley—a sound from the depths of the planet itself.

“Elara…” a voice whispered, not in her ears but inside her mind. She froze, panic and awe warring within her. She wasn’t alone.

“You must protect it,” the voice continued, reverberating through her thoughts. “The Heart of Solis cannot fall into the wrong hands.”

Elara stumbled backward, clutching the sphere tighter. As the voice faded, the wind abruptly stilled. The tension in the air remained. Her instincts screamed that she wasn’t safe. She needed to move.

Her comms crackled with an incoming transmission. “Elara! The storm’s grew! What’s happening down there?” It was Samir, her rover engineer, waiting miles away at the base.

“Something… found me.” Her voice sounded shaky even to herself. She couldn’t explain it, didn’t have time to. All she knew was that she was now holding something of immense value—and immense danger.

“Elara… get out of there now,” Samir urged. “Other signals… multiple vehicles near your location. Someone else is coming.”

Of course they were. The Martian Frontier wasn’t just populated by explorers and scientists anymore. Mars had become a haven for opportunists: smugglers, private corporations, those who would tear apart every inch of the planet for profit. If they got their hands on this artifact…

“No. I can’t let them have it,” she said aloud to the empty canyon, steadying her voice. Somehow, she felt the sphere pulse warmer at her words.

The rumbling returned, growing louder. Suddenly, a figure appeared over the ridge—a sleek black vehicle, dust spilling in its wake. The thieves had arrived sooner than expected. They wouldn’t ask nicely.

Elara didn’t hesitate. She ran. Her boots pounded against the rocky ground as adrenaline surged through her veins. The artifact seemed to grow heavier in her grasp, its energy linking with hers almost symbiotically. She realized it wasn’t just a treasure to be found—it was a treasure to be protected.

She reached her rover just as the attackers crested the ridge, their plasma rifles glinting in the dim Martian light. Diving into the pilot’s chair, she revved the engine and sped away. Sand sprayed behind her as she pushed the rover to its limits, weaving through jagged rocks and narrow passes.

In her rearview screen, she saw them gaining. Her mind raced. She had to hide the artifact—but where? How?

The pulse of the sphere seemed to nudge her thoughts. She glanced at her navigation screen and saw a faint landmark appear: “Ancient Cavern – SOLIS VALLIS – 2 KM.” The artifact was guiding her. Trusting her.
