The Fire and the Mirror”

There’s a war in every man.

Not the kind with bullets or flags, but a quiet, daily struggle—a whisper between two voices. One burns. The other reflects.

I met both of mine on a cold night in the desert, years ago, under a Texas sky split wide open with stars. I had just left the city, tired of the noise, the greed, the endless screens glowing in faces that forgot how to feel. I thought I’d find peace out there, just me and the land. But the silence didn’t bring calm—it brought the echo.

And in that echo, I heard him.

He wasn’t a stranger. He was the version of me that hungered. The part that wanted to tear the world open, take what was his, spit in the face of anyone who tried to tame him. He laughed at kindness. Called empathy a weakness. Said the world was nothing but predators and prey, and I’d been prey too damn long.

“Be the fire,” he said. “Burn through it.”

But then came the mirror.

The other me didn’t shout. He just stood there—quiet, calm, eyes like still water. He reminded me of the boy I used to be. The one who cried when he found a dead bird on the sidewalk. The one who held his grandfather’s hand in the hospital and didn’t look away. He believed in redemption. In reason. In something bigger than himself.

“Be the reflection,” he said. “See clearly.”

And I stood there, between fire and glass. One hand clenched. One hand open.

I’ve learned since then the truth most men run from: You don’t kill the other side. You carry it.

The fire protects you. The mirror guides you.

When you walk into a room, the world should feel your heat—but still see its own soul reflected in your eyes.

That’s the duality. That’s the dance.

Be wild, but not cruel. Be sharp, but not hollow. Be unafraid to fight—but know when to kneel. And above all, remember: you were born to burn bright and see clearly.

The rest is just noise.
