The Cardinal and the Long Winter
Once upon a time, in a quiet forest blanketed with snow, lived a bright red cardinal named Crimson. He was the only splash of color in the cold, white world. While most birds had flown south, Crimson had chosen to stay and protect his favorite tree—the old maple where he was born.
The winter was long and harsh. The wind howled like a wolf, the snow piled higher than the bushes, and food was hard to find. Crimson’s feathers puffed out to keep him warm, but sometimes he shivered and wished for spring.
One frosty morning, Crimson heard a tiny chirp. It came from a bush nearby. Curious, he hopped over and found a small sparrow shivering under a leaf.
“I got lost,” squeaked the sparrow. “I didn’t make it south in time.”
Crimson wrapped a wing around the little bird. “Don’t worry,” he said. “We’ll get through this winter together.”
Every day, Crimson flew through the icy wind to find berries hidden under snow, and every night, he shared his food and warmth with the sparrow. They sang quiet songs to stay brave and chirped stories about green leaves and warm sunshine.
Weeks passed, and one day, the wind softened. The snow began to melt, revealing patches of grass and the first brave flowers poking through.
Crimson chirped with joy. “Spring is coming!”
The forest slowly came alive again. Birds returned, the trees budded, and the sun warmed the land.
Crimson and the little sparrow sat together in the old maple tree, watching the world bloom.
“You’re my hero,” said the sparrow.
Crimson smiled. “Even the longest winters end, little one. All we need is courage, kindness, and a song in our hearts.”
And from that day on, whenever a bird felt cold or scared, they remembered the brave red cardinal who brought warmth to even the coldest winter.
The End.
