Thailand Took Everything but My Spirit – What I Learned After Getting Robbed (Twice)

Thailand is wild. The food is fire, the beaches are paradise, and the chaos? It’s real. But here’s something the travel influencers won’t tell you on YouTube: if you don’t lock down your stuff—really lock it down—it’s gone. Poof. Just like that.

Let me break it down. In just a few days, here’s what I lost:

A bottle of whiskey

A pack of cigarettes

A carabiner (yes, even that)

My iPhone 16 (not once—twice)

A lighter

My passport

$335 USD in cash

My Cash App card

My driver’s license

And for the cherry on top? My Amazon Visa card… again

Thailand didn’t just pick my pocket—it cleaned out my entire identity.

I thought I was street-smart. I’ve been around. But here’s the cold truth: what you see on YouTube is heavily filtered. Those smiling backpackers sipping coconuts on railay beach? Yeah, they’re not showing you what happens when your phone disappears during a night out or your wallet vanishes on a sketchy tuk tuk ride.

This isn’t a “don’t come to Thailand” post—it’s a wake-up call.

Here’s what I wish I’d done differently:

Use a money belt or hidden pouch. Fanny packs don’t cut it when they slash it open without you feeling a thing.

Lock your phone with Face ID, passcode, and don’t leave it on the table.

Carry only the essentials when you go out. Leave backup cards and documents locked in a hotel safe.

Enable Find My iPhone and make sure tracking is on at all times.

Photocopy your passport and store digital backups.

Final tip: Don’t romanticize the chaos. Thailand is beautiful—but it’s still real life. Crime happens. Scams exist. And you are not immune just because you’re on vacation.

I’m not bitter. I’m wiser now. And I’m still here.

But I’ll tell you this: the next time I travel, I’m not bringing anything I’m not prepared to lose.

Stay safe out there, travelers.
